Buckets of Blood
40" wide x 69" high x 20" deep
I’ve used whichever technique fit each part of this project. Painting: The stripes are painted on fabric. Assemblage: The stars are made from 50 milk or orange juice carton spouts, sewn to burlap. Sculpture: Pouring from the stars, large 3D blood drips are made from wire armature, plaster-wrap like that used in body casts, gel medium molding paste, and paint. Pen: The lettering on the reverse side of the project is written in permanent laundry marker sharpie on fabric. Green foam sheet and paper: the cartoon money below the bleeding flag has computer printed logos of the top U.S. defense contractors applied to the center of each foam sheet bill. Art can work best when a variety of materials are considered for a variety of purposes.
Many people within younger generations are interested in retaining our humanity. This can branch into valuing what is hand-done, local, natural, or unedited, especially as there is a perception that these things may become rare in the future. For some people, this branches into how we see politics. We approach political subjects with the intent of honesty, rather than treating the subject in a glossed-over or glamorized way.
The United States has continued to spend more money on the defense budget than any other country. The majority of U.S. discretionary spending is allocated for military use. We are also home to the biggest defense contracting company in the world, Lockheed Martin. With “Buckets of Blood,” I hope to bring attention to the mutilation and loss of life caused by this militarism. I hope to draw people’s attention with the visuals— visuals which can then ask, “What are the priorities of America?”
Clear acrylic sphere. 37.69" circumference. I outlined the continents on iridescent sheer fabric, then finished the edges with glue-gun. Trimmed, eyeballed, and placed (glued) onto globe. Made the peace sign from wire and plaster. Painted with black light acrylic paint. Inserted my 2-part peace sign inside globe, expanded it, and voila! Earthly Peace~

We’re all parts of the whole. What we do to the environment, the animals, the plants, the earth, we do to ourselves. Here, in the shape of a hand that’s making the sign for “love”, are the words “animal, plant, mineral”. Human hands have great potential for goodness or for destruction. Let’s choose the goodness.
acrylic, 24 x 36
Many artists paint their desires, their hopes. I am pro-peace. Peace is seen as impractical by those who are intimidated by the work it requires. Magic is sometimes illusion, but when something is accomplished that was formerly thought impossible, that is also magical. What may look easy and beautiful often comes at a high cost of good practices. We’ve sacrificed so much for war, but can’t we, instead, actively work toward peace? If we want to survive financially, emotionally, and spiritually, we have to make the effort. I want to inspire others to break from the lock-step mode that has become a “tradition” of war. It begins with educating ourselves about peaceful alternatives.

(magnifying glass hangs vertically at side; thumbprint in center of canvas)
Most people identify themselves as human, but what does that mean? Physically we have certain traits— i.e. hands, opposable thumbs, finger prints— but what does it mean to think or to feel like a human? In “Are You Human?” I’m exploring conflicting factors in the human psyche.
Culturally, we use fingerprints as an identifier. From one point of view, a fingerprint can identify a criminal. Are we, as humans, criminal in general? Doomed to repeat political and social injustices because we are flawed, being “only human?”
Conversely, the fingerprint can also be a symbol for individuality. No two fingerprints are the same. People are not identical machines. We each have our own conscious mind and our own emotions. We can feel sympathy and empathy. Humans perform a balancing act, desiring to be unique, and also desiring to belong in a community.
The hands represent interaction between people. Are we going to hurt each other, or help each other? Political and cultural conflict between groups of people on a national scale, and genocide and wars between nations on a global scale, are examples of infighting between what is biologically one species—a species which is still developing what it means to be human and to share resources evenly. We are all in this together, and must draw on our optimistic ideas of humanity.

We've put the bulb on the ceiling, like a human-made mini-sun in the sky. It’s become a symbol for our ingenuity and for our curiosity, and for our freedom to explore beyond the circadian day. We can dance, read, and travel by night. Our primordial torches live on today in energized glass.
